OBJECTIVE OF THE DATATHON:

We have observed that scheduling C-17 squadron aircrew is overly time-consuming, manually intensive and increases the chance of human errors, causing unpredictability, and poor work-life balance. It also causes missed training opportunities, and ultimately inefficient use of resources. Our goal is to optimize short-term decisions while taking into account long-term second & third-order effects, ultimately decreasing the time required to prepare schedules, increasing the predictability for increased mission effectiveness.

WHAT IS PUCKBOARD:
Puckboard is a modern scheduling website that enables real time, collaborative scheduling, from anywhere in the world. Puckboard focuses on creating a great user experience for schedulers and crew members while automating time consuming tasks. The Puckboard project is led by a team of Airmen from TRON, a DoD software factory. TRON has partnered with the USAF/MIT AI Accelerator, Kessel Run Wing Operations Branch, and the Chief Data Office to incorporate lessons learned from this CDO Datathon into Puckboard.

OUTCOMES OF THE DATATHON:

Create an algorithm that, given a set of aircrew slots and constraints, optimizes the flight crew schedule and validates your hypothesis. These solutions should provide insights to the human aircrew Scheduler.

Submit a presentation and methodology with feature sets / attributes and the associated rationale.

PRINCIPLES OF THE DATATHON:

  • Adopt the "Getting to Yes" mentality
  • Cultivate an inclusive and judgment-free space
  • Encourage participants to be open-minded and fully present
  • Support outcome-driven, interpersonal collaboration
